Sharing the Message with the Highest of Worship Production Technology Standards

Before they were a church, the efforts of Passion City were aimed at engaging college students to live for the renown of Jesus. Diversified was an original partner in the construction of the first permanent gathering site at 515 Garson Drive. Since that time, the ministry has developed the highest of worship production technology standards and embraced a variety of large events in their space (even bull riding!). Diversified has helped every step of the way with several upgrades to accommodate growth.

When the time came to construct a new Cumberland location, Passion City engaged the Diversified team again. This was the first time that the organization had worked with a single partner for all the technology systems in a facility. The Passion team is unique because they have several experts on their production team, and they knew they needed the right partner to achieve their production goals. Having launched in Cumberland in 2017 at North Atlanta High School, this permanent home is not only vital for the growing church community in the city but also serves as the production hub for the Passion organization, meaning that all broadcast content sent out to the world is cut and mixed from this location. Diversified was trusted to support their exact vision at a very granular level, developing solutions that represent several first’s in the church production world.

“Working with Tim Corder and the team at Diversified was really great. We love that Diversified is really structured well to make sure that our first Sunday, and the second Sunday, and the third Sunday after that were as seamless for us as possible. I’m excited to see us come out of COVID stronger than ever as a result of this new facility.”

– Taylor Charboneau, Director of Production

The new auditorium features 180-degree seating spread between the main floor and the balcony with the furthest only 60 feet away from downstage center. Although there is space for 1,400 people, this space has a unique vibe because of how intimate it is for such a large space. At the heart of the audio system is a L-Acoustics K2 loudspeaker system, Digico audio consoles and Shure wireless. The lighting system is based around a Grand MA 3 console, Pathway Pathport streaming ACN lighting control, and a mix of Martin and GLP fixtures as a standard rep plot that is supplemented with rental fixtures according to the demands of particular events. The video system is comprised of a Ross Video backbone in routing and switching with two control rooms – one for the in-room IMAG cut and one for the broadcast feed that is streamed around the world, Panasonic Varicam cinema cameras with a mix of Canon and Fujinon lensing and Vinten tripods, Ross XPression and Renewed Vision ProPresenter GFX systems, Clearcom matrix intercom, Teradek wireless video transmission, and Defy robotic dolly and wire cam systems.

A collection of Unilumin UPAD III 2.6mm LED panels are used to create visual canvases on stage that are served by a Disguise media server as an important part of the visual brand of Passion gatherings. The room is unique for its lack of permanent side screens, instead relying on these stage LED canvases to share video in more unique and engaging ways.

In addition to the main auditorium environment, Diversified also installed circulation audio and video systems comprised of JBL speakers, Crown amplification, and Samsung commercial displays. Child and student large group environments are centered around Waves LV1 audio consoles, Yamaha loudspeaker systems, MA and Chauvet lighting, and flat panel displays with Renewed Vision ProPresenter GFX.

For over 20 years, Passion has always been known for God-sized dreams, utilizing worship production technology in fresh and creative ways as a tool to make Jesus known. After successfully completing the construction and system integration process at the Cumberland location, the teams at Passion City and Diversified have continued to stay connected, ensuring the overall mission of the church stays firmly supported.

High Impact Church AVL System Integration Delivers Global Reach for First Permanent Home

The Belonging Co (TBCo), founded in 2010 and one of the fastest growing and most influential worship movements in the U.S., sought to expand its reach in its hometown of Nashville, TN with its first permanent facility. Transforming the existing warehouse with limited trim height and structural columns throughout into a world class performance venue would require the Diversified team to think outside the box at every turn to best represent TBCo’s unique mission and DNA. The Diversified team collaborated closely with the client, facilitating product auditions for critical elements of the system prior to the church AVL system integration. The auditions including loudspeakers, cameras, video core and the LED video wall. A d&b KSL loudspeaker system, one of the first to be installed in a church in the world, creates extremely high fidelity while maintaining consistent room coverage. For the online audience, whose numbers exceed those in person, a ten camera UHD cinematic broadcast video system bolsters TBCo’s well known, interactive experience as well as the in-room presentation. Additionally, a large Brompton-based LED wall from THOR: and robust stage and house lighting system immerse the live audience.

Equally important to the church was a strong, flexible foundation based on a hybrid touring infrastructure for various programming with extensive fiber and copper tie lines. A Riedel Artist Matrix Intercom system connects the production team with the artists onstage, allowing the worship team to flow alongside as a cohesive group in ways never before possible. Diversified also provided church AVL system integratation in a youth space & multi-purpose meeting rooms, as well as circulation AV for the entire facility.

In just six years, this culture-shaping church has grown to also include a worship collective, a conference and even a college. This new facility has provided a much needed permanent home to support the growing movement and has already been hailed one of the best sounding and looking rooms in a town known as “Music City.”

Broadcast Integration of New and Legacy Equipment Provides High Quality Footage and Flexible Editing

Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM), a global Christian apologetics ministry with a team of 70 speakers, utilizes radio, TV programming and live events to reach their audience. RZIM has partnered with Diversified for their broadcast, audio visual, IT and RF needs since 1993. They again sought the expertise of Diversified’s Media & Entertainment group and Advanced Visual Environments team for design and implementation of a system capable of four simultaneous channels of HD-SDI ingest from a multi-camera environment for live recording.

The solution would need to integrate with legacy equipment, capture up to four simultaneous channels of HD-SDI ingest and convert to a variety of industry channels and formats. The project would also be implemented within a strict timeline and involve working during non-business hours.

Using the Bluefish444 IngeSTore Server 3G appliance, Diversified designed a system that integrated the existing Quantum MDC and storage server while supporting the wide range of communication mediums required. The appliance is configured to capture from a Ross Carbonite Extreme production switcher via HD-SDI, which is then transferred over a 10Gb interface connection to networked shared storage. The four channels of DNxHD media is immediately available to RZIM editing suites for post-production.

The solution has proven successful, providing the highest quality of raw footage along with greater flexibility during the editing process. RZIM believes this solution will enable rapid growth for their off-site events and prove to be a viable option for ingest in remote areas.

12Stone Church

Broadcasting to Parishioners Across Multiple Campuses

12Stone Church has experienced dramatic growth over the past decade serving a staggering 30,000+ parishioners in the greater Atlanta region. With more than twenty worship services each week, spread across four metro-Atlanta campuses, the church faced numerous technical challenges in broadcasting to parishioners.

12Stone’s three remote campuses regularly experienced a one-week delay in content as the teaching was recorded, edited and distributed on hard drives to each location. With only 60 days remaining until the grand opening of its new Sugarloaf campus, 12Stone leaders approached and engaged Diversified as its AV & broadcast systems integrator.

Additionally, 12Stone had one major addition to the project’s design that it brought to Diversified. The church wanted to develop a solution for real-time distribution of live teaching at all four campuses. Solution broadcasting to multiple locations required that each campus had the ability to “time slip” the teaching by a few minutes. This would allow the live, in-house worship within the center to flow and conclude at its own natural pace rather than land at a specific hit time. In addition, the pastor wanted the flexibility to teach in person from two of the church’s four campuses. This ability required that these two main campuses needed to act as either the hub or spoke system on any given day. To achieve this, the two sites needed to have common tools so that the production staff and pastor could move easily between them, producing content with a predictable quality level.

12Stone Church’s newest campus at Sugarloaf not only increased the church membership but also expanded capabilities to fully deliver its message. The pastor and production team can now alternate which campus will host the live teachings to give greater flexibility and control over sermons, without compromising the quality in broadcasting to parishioners. Named as a Best House of Worship Project of the Year by Commercial Integrator, this project is a shining success for all involved.

Updated Sports Broadcast Facility Serves the NBA Domestic and International Markets

The National Basketball Association (NBA) engaged Diversified when they decided to consolidate operations of their production division, NBA Entertainment, from two existing facilities into one modern space. After renovation of an entire floor, Diversified deployed its fast track installation process to ensure the system would be functional for basketball season.

The new facility features 16 edit rooms, four game rooms, a broadcast operations center, a technical operations center, a digital media management control room, a tape dubbing room, a central machine room, a small flash studio, graphics area, logging area, audio sweetening, a voiceover booth and a broadband edit area. The 24-position logging area works in tandem with a custom SGI ingest and archive system. Two of the four game rooms rebrand live games for international feeds, with capabilities for a third when required in the future. The fourth room is dedicated to serving the NBA International Channel.

The one floor now houses all the NBA’s ingest and archiving activities, whereby every game is systematically logged, and appropriate rich metadata is attached to each clip. Current and historical footage dating back to the late 1940’s is properly preserved to ensure the archival history of the league and players To keep up with this frenetic production activity, Diversified helped implement a massive high-speed area network (HSAN) consisting of a Harris NetVX platform of encoders and decoders, directly tied to Harris Nexio video servers located at every NBA arena across the country. This system helps to capture every camera view of every game. Storage of all of the games is accomplished with dual StorageTek SL8500 libraries that provide 300 petabytes of offline storage.

The new broadcast facility handles the high-demand production activity and offers plenty of room for growth.

BUILDING THE LARGEST AND MOST ADVANCED NEWS CENTRE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Sky News Arabia brings world class news coverage to the Middle East, in the Arabic language, 24/7 online, via tablets and on smartphones.  As a start-up, its production facilities represent the state of the art in television and online news, and building its new centre was one of the largest undertaken in the region.

Newsgathering is expensive, and Sky News Arabia wanted a broadcast system which worked smoothly and reliably, and used automation to minimise the requirement for operational staff. The design required the latest thinking in workflow to achieve this seamless automation, and best of breed products to maximise quality and flexibility.

A project of this scale, which looks to achieve efficiency through automation, calls for the integration of systems from a number of manufacturers, which in turn requires new developments in those products and to create an open interface between them. Designing these interfaces and promoting the development of the additional functionality was a critical aspect of Diversified’s task.

An excellent example is in the unified bookings system required by Sky News Arabia for its communications systems around the world. In the traditional television news operation, each element required is booked separately, calling for a lot of manual co-ordination. Sky News Arabia wanted to be able to make a single booking for all functionality. Diversifed drove the development of new functionality for the Broadcast Bionics PhoneBox system. It is now capable of controlling the Riedel intercom infrastructure, so that as well as setting up the complete signal path a ScheduAll booking also sets up the talkback paths between the appropriate locations.

The result is that a single booking can set up an encoder in, say, Cairo, and connect it via MPLS or satellite path to Sky News Arabia; route it to a decoder, frame rate convertor or audio shuffler as required; record it to the server and update the asset management; and ensure that all participants are connected on talkback. All the elements are automated, so the booking merely requires source, destination file and time.

Broadcast Installation of Infrastructure Expands Modern HD Workflow

Following the merger between Orbit, based in Bahrain and Showtime, based in Dubai, the combined organisation, “OSN” decided to consolidate their business by moving key parts of their operations from Bahrain to Dubai including all broadcast operations.

However, the existing broadcast IT and storage infrastructure in Dubai needed broadcast installation, upgrade and expansion to cope with the increased number of channels that would now be played out from that site, along with the increasing HD requirement and associated media workflows.

The entire project for OSN was delivered very rapidly to fit in with an aggressive migration of their services from Bahrain to Dubai. Due to the tight timeframe, Diversified prebuilt the racks and wiring looms in their UK factory; this also allowed the complex switch configuration and testing to be carried out in the UK. This pre-build ethos allowed the project to proceed quickly against the prescribed 10-week timeline. Firstly the existing edge switches were swung across to the new redundant Cisco core, Diversified re-configured hosts as required to ensure continuity of service taking into consideration the DNS entries and other critical network parameters. As the project progressed new fibres were laid in to provide a redundant architecture to the edge. Some of the most crucial parts of the migration were carried out during off-peak hours overnight to minimise disruption to the workflow. The final stage of the project was to hook the high end clustered storage solution into the new core switch to open up its contiguous, high performance and high availability storage to the entire workflow.

Diversified deployed a multidiscipline team of around 8 people to deliver this project backed up by the massive resources available in Diversified’s factory in the UK. Diversified Middle East provided key personnel to ensure the continuity of the delivery; a specialist to manage the onsite activities and ensure the quality of the finished product, a project manager to oversee the UK prebuild and UAE delivery and a design expert to produce the solution and ensure the delivered project measured up to the initially calculated throughputs.

The new infrastructure promotes a new era of high-end television production at higher channel counts and a lower price point.

Redesigning Media Workflow for Growth andContinuity in New Broadcast Media Facility

KHET PBS Hawaii selected Diversified as the technical and design consultant for its new broadcast media facility. The facility, previously designed by two other companies, needed to be redesigned so that existing and new technology would ensure continuity between the old and new sites. PBS desired a flexible broadcast media center with extended capabilities for future endeavors. The design also had to provide familiarity of workflows for their staff engineers plus ease of maintenance.

Establishing design guidelines to better accommodate workflows within the outsourced Master Control and production areas was critical. Accomplishing this was further complicated by the impending construction schedule. Fortunately, the timeline allotted the necessary time and attention required to re-work the original design. This was necessary since the project was highly technical and a complicated solution that relied heavily on equipment unfamiliar to KHET staff.

Extensive meetings were conducted, outlining Diversified’s processes, exploring workflows and evaluating staff capabilities. Diversified value-engineered a system which would easily transfer to their knowledge base and ease the PBS staff into this transition with minimal downtime and training.

Challenges were addressed in a series of value-engineering sessions by Diversified’s collective teams. The areas affected included IT-Centric Infrastructure necessitated by the overarching originally proposed solution, studio lighting, ingest and master control. Centralized network storage and archiving infrastructure provides PBS staff with the ability to manage media assets and provide an efficient, seamless workflow for sharing media between all groups, inclusive of the out-sourced Master Control.

PBS Hawaii has a flexible, new broadcast media center as a result of Diversified’s dedication to listening to the input, insight and feedback from the KHET staff. A simpler, but higher-quality and fine-tuned design replaced the unfamiliar workflow and technologies from the previous designs, and allowed for a new facility outfitted with a dynamic and value-engineered system.

Advanced Multi-Format Production Trucks Support Sports and Entertainment Events

The demand for HDTV coverage of live television events has created a major incentive for mobile production companies to put more multi-format production trucks on the road. New Century chose Diversified to assist in engineering and integrating their mobile production trucks.

Traditionally, the mobile production market uses two distinct truck designs—those geared toward entertainment events (concerts, conventions, etc.) and those specialized for sporting events. Although equipment and format requirements have differed for these two types of vehicles, new technologies are driving toward a one-design fleet, flexible enough to allow coverage of a wide variety of events by a common truck design.

New Century required two production units to be commissioned. The trucks were built at Diversified’s Santa Clara, California integration facility. Diversified’s design and integration teams have arguably more experience in the mobile production market than any other firm in the United States and completed both of these projects in less than nine weeks.

By utilizing an experienced leader in this field, NCP launched very high quality vehicles on a short timeline and kept their own engineering staff focused toward ongoing operations and existing business.

New Century, founded in 1984, now operates nine mobile production units, including NCP VII and NCP IV. While NCP IV is similar in design to its first HD truck, NCP VII was designed to handle the largest shows in television and built for weekly network sports productions. ESPN, CBS and FOX are the primary clients for these mobile production units.

Collaborative Spaces Work with Modern, Open Architecture

The Logistics Management Institute (LMI) decided to relocate its headquarters to a 165,000-square-foot, LEED-certified, state-of-the-art, metro-accessible space. LMI occupies the first seven floors of the Class A building and each floor is approximately 25,000-square-feet. The new office will enable LMI’s staff to be more collaborative and innovative, offering better technology, better conferencing space in an open, light-filled design.

Prior to program development, handled by Gensler Architects and CMS Consultants, Diversified was engaged in the LMI headquarters relocation to 7940 Jones Branch Drive in Tysons Corner, Virginia. Working through the general contractor, HITT Contracting, Diversified was short listed based on four main criteria—knowledge of the client’s business, availability of resources, technical aptitude and the ability to be responsible for audio visual applications as well as teledata installation for the project deliverable and scope.

After award, the project was on the fast track, delivered by floor in coordination with HITT Contracting around rooms and MDF closets. Meeting the demands of occupancy for LMI was crucial to the success of the project. There were 38 spaces that fell into Diversified’s scope including the reception area, executive conference rooms, large multi-purpose rooms and collaborative meeting rooms. One of LMI’s needs that Diversified was working to provide prior to award of the project was content distribution. Specifically, digital signage and streaming media.

Diversified specializes in digital signage and designed a platform with the potential to acquire content from a live or archived meeting and distribute it within or outside of the LMI network, based upon LDAP or rights management. The digital signage platform also includes the ability to incorporate streams within the window of the template display and can be administered by select groups depending on roles specified within the application interface.

Diversified continues work with LMI in multiple capacities.
