Canberra Airport

Cutting-Edge AV Solution Provides Mission Critical Communications System For Major Airport

Canberra Airport, which sees on average 8 million passengers a year, added a new terminal that covers 55,000 square meters. Diversified designed, supplied and installed the digital Public Address (PA) and Emergency Warning & Intercommunication System (EWIS) upon the development of the airport's expansive Western Concourse Terminal. The mission critical communications system broadcasts airport-wide communication of important scheduled and nonscheduled flight and safety information to passengers and visitors.

This high-performance environment, with a high volume of pedestrian traffic, required careful consideration when it came to installing the new PA & Emergency Warning & Intercommunication System. It is the backbone of a smooth airport operation.

Canberra Airport posed some complex audio visual challenges given the expansive space. For example, the airport’s stunning atrium is a particularly challenging space given the volume of glass used. The three-story (16-meter high) large glass atrium — which overlooks aircrafts as they dock, active runways and the Canberra region beyond—consists of 279 glazed panels and covers an area of 1,500 square meters.

This space required detailed EASE modeling to ensure optimal placement of speakers. The new PA & EWIS technology was seamlessly integrated with the existing system, resulting in a centralized communication control point that assimilates the new and legacy systems.

The Diversified commissioning team worked overnight to have the new system operational by morning. The night work was also necessary to undertake the required EVAC testing of the system.
