Vision built into

THE BLUEPRINT

Objective

Modern university campuses are immersive, multi-functional environments that represent the institution’s brand, values, and ambitions. At Western University, the new Schmeichel Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre (SEI) was designed to reflect just that. More than an academic space, it’s a central hub for events, alumni gatherings, internal trainings, and community outreach.

The technology was part of the original blueprints, carefully integrated to support a wide range of users while preserving the building’s clean, modern aesthetic. Every display, speaker, and control system needed to perform flawlessly without disrupting the architectural flow or visual clarity of the space.

Solution

With a clear vision and years of experience managing the university’s AV enterprise, Western’s Classroom Technology Group, part of the university’s Western Technology Services division, led the charge. To help execute that vision with precision, they turned to Diversified, their trusted collaborator and technology partner with a proven track record of delivering smart, scalable solutions that align with both function and form.

Strategic Planning From Day One

The foundation for success was laid years before the first screen was mounted. Western began evaluating LED technologies in 2020 and collaborated early with Diversified on manufacturer consultation, product selection, and infrastructure planning. This ensured the necessary AV system specifications were included in the architectural design from day one. The poured concrete design required all cable pathways to be pre-planned, and Diversified provided detailed drawings of the LED display systems for the builders ahead of construction.

Dual-Zone Event Spaces, One Seamless Experience

The centerpiece of the SEI facility is a large, split-height event space that functions as two distinct AV zones. To support this architectural nuance, Diversified installed a total of six Sharp dvLED video walls, including two in the soaring atrium area and two additional displays in the lower-ceiling gallery zone. Upstairs, the Alumni Commons space features two more video walls that can operate independently or join the downstairs system via a connected AV infrastructure.

Speakers

High-Performance Sound In a Challenging Space

Acoustically, the atrium presented major challenges because of the shape of the space and the chosen construction materials. Western partnered with DKE Engineering to design a custom EM Acoustics speaker solution tailored to the room’s unique dimensions. Contact Distribution played an integral role coordinating product logistics and providing the support services needed to realize the custom EM speaker rig. Diversified executed the rigging with precision, bringing in certified specialists to mount the speakers to a main structural beam at great height, ensuring exact placement and aiming to optimize sound coverage across both spaces.

Simplified Control for Non-Technical Users

Designed by Western’s Classroom Technology Group with decades of AV design, integration, and support experience for classrooms and presentation spaces, the system emphasizes simple, intuitive control. Crestron-based interfaces enable a differential cohort of users—whether from alumni relations, HR, faculty, or administration—to walk in, launch a presentation, and focus on the message, not the tech.

Training that Builds Buy-In

Rather than handing off a finished system and walking away, Western Technology Services committed to a hands-on onboarding approach. The Classroom Technology Group delivered numerous special in-person training sessions throughout May and June to give stakeholders the confidence and familiarity to use the technology effectively. By proactively addressing the human side of technology adoption, the team eliminated confusion and dramatically increased usage and satisfaction.

Impact

The result is a striking, future-ready venue that puts Western’s commitment to innovation and excellence front and center. From high-profile donor receptions to departmental trainings and cross-campus summits, every event in the SEI feels as polished and impactful as the ideas it showcases.

What started as a complex design challenge became a model for strategic AV planning, seamless coordination, and design-led integration. It also advanced a broader institutional goal: promoting more visibility to the value that Western Technology Services and its teams bring to the Western community.

Diversified continues to support Western with ongoing service and consultation, offering guidance on future opportunities for enhancement and technology choices across the institution.
