Engineering Beyond the Design
For Nii Bruce-Vanderpuije, engineering isn't about choosing the right technology. It's about understanding the problem first.
Before a design ever takes shape, he wants to know what the client is trying to accomplish, who will use the solution and what success looks like once it's deployed. Just as importantly, he thinks about what happens on day two—how the system will be supported, maintained and used every day.
That mindset has shaped his career and the way he leads engineering today. He believes products should be the result of the design process, not the beginning of it. Once the operational needs, user experience and business goals are understood, selecting the technology becomes much more straightforward.

Finding His Way to AV
Like many people in the industry, Nii didn't set out to build a career in AV.
His background is in IT, where AV was one part of larger enterprise technology environments. Joining Diversified gave him the opportunity to move into a management role while working in an organization dedicated to AV, and he quickly realized the industry was much broader than he had imagined.
What drew him in was the intersection of disciplines. AV combines networking, software, hardware, user experience, construction and design, but it also produces something tangible. At the end of a project, you can walk into a room, a building or a venue and see the result of what your team designed. As enterprise technology has evolved, he has watched AV become increasingly integrated with IT, making the transition feel like a natural progression.

Designing for Day Two
Leading enterprise engineering teams has broadened the way Nii thinks about engineering.
Early in his career, the challenge was solving technical problems. Today, he thinks beyond the design itself and asks whether a solution can be understood, repeated and supported by an entire organization. Strong engineering still matters, but so do clear documentation, repeatable processes, coordination between teams and a plan for what happens after deployment.
That same thinking shapes his approach to standards. For Nii, standards create consistency—and consistency creates trust. Rather than making every deployment identical, standards create a common foundation across hundreds, or even thousands, of locations while still leaving room for site-specific needs. By removing unnecessary variation, engineering teams can focus on the places where thoughtful design adds the most value instead of reinventing the fundamentals on every project.

Turning Big Ideas into Reality
Some of Nii's favorite projects are the ones that don't come with a playbook.
One project that stands out involved creating an interactive retro gaming experience on a Times Square billboard. The concept called for people sitting on a branded couch at street level to control the game on the massive billboard using wireless joysticks.
The idea sounded simple. The engineering was another story.
Rather than relying on impractical cable runs, the team explored multiple approaches before developing a cloud-based solution that transmitted controller inputs over a cellular connection with extremely low latency. The result was an experience that felt completely natural to the people playing it, even though the technology behind it required months of engineering, testing and refinement.
For Nii, those are the most rewarding projects—the ones where something that was once incredibly complex becomes simple for the end user. When the engineering fades into the background and the experience simply works, he knows the team has done its job well.

Building Engineers, Not Just Systems
While Nii enjoys solving technical challenges, developing people has become one of the most rewarding parts of his role.
He enjoys helping engineers see a bigger version of what they're capable of, whether that's working through a difficult technical problem, learning to communicate ideas more effectively or taking ownership of a project. Watching someone grow into the person others naturally rely on has become one of his favorite measures of success.
That philosophy also influences his leadership style. For Nii, leadership at scale is less about making every decision himself and more about building a system where other people can make good decisions. By creating clear expectations, repeatable processes and strong feedback loops, he gives teams the framework they need to succeed.
Looking Ahead
As AV continues to converge with IT, Nii believes engineering will continue to evolve alongside it.
Today's engineers need to think beyond traditional AV design and become comfortable with networking, cloud services, automation, cybersecurity and APIs. Those skills are becoming just as important as understanding the technology inside the room because AV is now part of a much broader enterprise ecosystem.
He sees AI in much the same way he sees any new engineering tool: something that helps shorten the distance between an idea and execution. Rather than replacing engineers, it gives them another way to research, plan and solve problems more efficiently.
Even as the technology changes, his perspective remains consistent. The best engineering isn't judged on the day a project is commissioned. It's measured by whether that solution is still manageable, secure and easy to support years later. That's why Nii believes engineering belongs at the beginning of every conversation—not simply to design the system, but to shape how it will perform throughout its entire lifecycle.
