Years in Industry
Finding His Way into AV
Like most people in the industry, Mathew didn’t initially set out to build a career in AV. He studied music and audio in college. Post-graduation, he pursued live sound while working as a cable installer.
After moving to Maryland in 2016, a connection led him to his first AV installation role, where he combined his technical skills with his interest in audio. He worked his way up from installer to lead installer at Diversified, spent time on the client side, and eventually found his way back to New Jersey and returned to Diversified this time as a Field Engineer.
What still draws Mathew to the work is seeing a system come together—from understanding the design to configuring the technology, and finally, seeing it perform as intended.

Figuring It Out—Together
When something doesn’t work as intended, Mathew starts with the fundamentals: understanding the equipment, checking the settings, and digging into the documentation. Experience has taught him when to bring others into the conversations, with Diversified’s network of field engineers he has access to colleagues across the country who can offer a different perspective. He believes that checking your ego at the door makes room for other ideas, allowing for insights that may not have been considered before. For Mathew, listening rather than reacting is key to stronger collaboration and partnerships.

Taking Ownership
Mathew’s drive to go above and beyond comes down to ownership. When he joins a project, he feels responsible for its success and the day-to-day user experience the client will have. This often means spending time solving difficult problems and putting in extra time to meet deadlines. He wants his work to reinforce the client’s confidence in Diversified.
One particular project put this mindset to the test for Mathew. It was the largest project he had worked on, lasting a little more than a year, and was his first experience as a true lead. Compressed deadlines, new technology, and unfamiliar system integrations created challenges from every direction for him and the team. Navigating this complexity tested his technical skills, decision-making, and ability to adapt to an ever-changing project environment.

From Learning to Leading
After a decade in AV, Mathew sees self-education as an essential aspect of his career growth. Technology moves too quickly to learn everything on the job, making continued education critical to staying current. Over time, he has become someone others can rely on, and this shift has taken on new meaning with his recent move into the Field Engineering Supervisor role.
Part of this new responsibility is helping other field engineers work through challenges. He doesn’t expect to have all the answers, but he wants to offer the same level of support he valued early in his career.
Holding this new position reflects how far he’s come in the AV industry, from installer to Field Engineering Supervisor. Mathew is proud to be in a position that helps others develop and grow their skills.
The Next Step Forward
Mathew intends to remain rooted in field engineering while exploring how he can contribute to his new role as a supervisor. From taking on new responsibilities to developing skills that will make him a more effective leader and continue his adaptability as technology evolves, he is ready to see where the next challenge takes him rather than focusing on a specific destination.
