Updated Sports Broadcast Facility Serves the NBA Domestic and International Markets

The National Basketball Association (NBA) engaged Diversified when they decided to consolidate operations of their production division, NBA Entertainment, from two existing facilities into one modern space. After renovation of an entire floor, Diversified deployed its fast track installation process to ensure the system would be functional for basketball season.

The new facility features 16 edit rooms, four game rooms, a broadcast operations center, a technical operations center, a digital media management control room, a tape dubbing room, a central machine room, a small flash studio, graphics area, logging area, audio sweetening, a voiceover booth and a broadband edit area. The 24-position logging area works in tandem with a custom SGI ingest and archive system. Two of the four game rooms rebrand live games for international feeds, with capabilities for a third when required in the future. The fourth room is dedicated to serving the NBA International Channel.

The one floor now houses all the NBA’s ingest and archiving activities, whereby every game is systematically logged, and appropriate rich metadata is attached to each clip. Current and historical footage dating back to the late 1940’s is properly preserved to ensure the archival history of the league and players To keep up with this frenetic production activity, Diversified helped implement a massive high-speed area network (HSAN) consisting of a Harris NetVX platform of encoders and decoders, directly tied to Harris Nexio video servers located at every NBA arena across the country. This system helps to capture every camera view of every game. Storage of all of the games is accomplished with dual StorageTek SL8500 libraries that provide 300 petabytes of offline storage.

The new broadcast facility handles the high-demand production activity and offers plenty of room for growth.
